In addition to analyzing financial performance, a corporation can be scrutinized on the basis of social or value based criteria. There is a broad range of criteria that we can look at, and it is up to the individual to indicate to us which of the criteria fit his or her values.
Social criteria screens are made up of two broad categories:
- Negative screen - screens out/draws negative attention to corporations that may be perceived to have a negative impact on society.
- Most commonly companies that manufacture or have some association with tobacco, gambling, alcohol, and weapons are screened out.
- Positive screen - screens in/draws positive attention to corporations that have a proactive, positive impact on society.
- The following criteria can be screened for on both a negative and positive basis:
- Community
- Corporate Governance
- Diversity
- Employee Relations
- Environment
- Human Rights
- Product
After our client establishes his or her values and we complete our investment research, we can then invest some or all of our client's assets in both socially responsible stocks and mutual funds.
